What is Surgical Maze Procedure (Maze)?
While performing open-chest cardiac surgery, a set of pre-defined lesions are created in the atria using incision and suture or energy ablation (e.g., cryoablation, bipolar radiofrequency) to form conduction block pathways. Left atrial appendage management and temporary pacing support are added as needed. Postoperatively, heart rhythm, electrolytes, and bleeding are continuously monitored in the intensive care unit and ward, with the goal of restoring stable conduction and reducing the risk of thrombosis.
